Month 9 — Cruising and Communicating

🌱 Milestones & Development

Cruising — walking sideways while holding onto furniture — is the defining skill of Month 9. Your baby is testing their legs, building balance, and working up the courage for those first unassisted steps that could arrive any time from now to Month 15. They're also communicating with increasing sophistication: pointing at things they want or find interesting, waving hello and goodbye, clapping, and using sounds that are clearly meant to mean specific things even if they're not words yet. The pincer grip is refined enough now to pick up individual peas — and immediately eat them.

🏥 Good to Know

The 9-month developmental check is a key one — your paediatrician will assess communication, social interaction, and motor skills, and it includes a formal developmental screening in many countries. Vaccinations for MMR and others are often given at or just after this visit depending on your country's schedule. Sleep is typically 12–14 hours per 24 hours, including 2 naps. If your baby is still on 3 naps, most are ready to transition to 2 by 9 months.

💡 Whoa, Really?

Your 9-month-old understands the word 'no' — and probably ignores it anyway. That's not defiance, it's neuroscience: the prefrontal cortex, which handles impulse control, won't be fully developed until their mid-twenties. Your baby genuinely cannot stop themselves from doing something interesting just because you said not to. Redirection — moving them away from the thing — works far better than 'no' at this age.

🤱 This Month's Tip

Reading to your baby at this age pays dividends you can't see yet. They can't understand plots or most words, but they're absorbing the rhythm of language, learning that pictures represent real things, and building the concept that books are enjoyable. Board books they can handle themselves, chew, and interact with are ideal. Let them turn pages, point, and babble — following their lead makes it more engaging for both of you.

🥗 Nutrition This Month

By 9 months, your baby should be eating three balanced meals a day plus snacks. Family foods cut into small pieces are fine — you don't need separate baby food forever. Continue breast milk or formula as the main drink.

👫 For Your Partner

Encourage lots of standing practice — hold your baby's hands while they stand and let them cruise along furniture. The more they practise, the sooner they'll walk.
