Overall Pregnancy
Your Baby is About

Halfway! Your baby is about 25cm from head to heel and weighs around 330 grams — the size of a banana. The brain is developing the regions responsible for all five senses. Nails are growing toward the ends of the fingers. The baby is incredibly active, regularly changing positions, stretching, and practising all kinds of movements. You should be feeling those movements now if you haven't already.
From Week 20, your uterus is roughly level with your belly button and will grow about 1cm per week from here on. Your provider will start measuring fundal height at appointments to track growth. Your belly button may start to pop outward as your uterus presses against it from behind — this is completely normal and reverses after birth.
At 20 weeks, your baby's brain is creating neural connections at a rate that won't happen again in their lifetime. The brain is literally being wired — and the connections formed now create the foundation for learning, memory, and personality. Music, voices, and even your emotional state during pregnancy can influence this process.
Halfway is a good moment to check in on your mental health, not just your physical health. Prenatal anxiety and depression affect around 1 in 5 pregnant people. If you've been feeling persistently low, anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected from the pregnancy, tell your midwife or GP. There's support available and getting help now makes a real difference to both you and your baby.
You need approximately 300 extra calories a day in the second trimester — but quality matters more than quantity. Focus on nutrient-dense foods rather than simply eating more.
Check in on your partner's mental health this week — prenatal anxiety is very common and often goes unmentioned. Ask directly and listen without trying to fix.
