Overall Pregnancy
Your Baby is About
rutabaga
Your baby is about 34cm and 660 grams — the size of a rutabaga. The skin is becoming less wrinkled as fat continues to fill it out, and the nostrils — which have been sealed until now — are opening for the first time. Your baby can now respond to sounds from outside the womb. The capillaries under the skin are developing, giving the skin a pinker, less translucent appearance.
From about now, your provider may recommend starting kick counting — choosing a time each day to count your baby's movements until you reach 10. Most babies will reach 10 movements within 2 hours. If your baby seems unusually quiet on any given day, contact your provider rather than waiting — a change in movement patterns is worth checking out promptly.
By Week 25, your baby can distinguish between different voices — not just sounds in general. Research shows that babies at this stage can tell the difference between their mother's voice and a stranger's, responding differently to familiar voices. By Week 25, they can also begin to react to music, moving more in response to rhythmic sounds.
Swelling in the feet and ankles often starts around now and is completely normal. Elevating your feet when you sit, wearing compression socks, staying hydrated, and avoiding standing for long periods all help. If swelling is sudden, severe, or accompanied by headaches or visual changes, contact your provider immediately.
Protein needs increase in the third trimester — aim for at least 80–100g daily. Greek yogurt, eggs, chicken, fish, lentils, and cottage cheese are all efficient sources.
Foot swelling and fatigue are real now — foot massages, taking over household tasks that require standing, and helping with shoes and socks are all genuinely useful.
