Your Baby is About
large cabbage
Your baby is about 40cm and 1.3kg — the size of a large cabbage. The bone marrow is now fully running blood cell production, and the lanugo is starting to disappear as fat fills out the skin. Your baby can regulate their own body temperature to some extent. The brain is maturing rapidly, with complex connections forming daily. Your baby is practising sucking and swallowing, getting ready for feeding after birth.
Your centre of gravity has shifted significantly, which can affect your balance and make you feel clumsier than usual. This is normal and not a reflection of coordination — it's purely physical. Take extra care on stairs, be cautious when getting out of the bath, and slow down generally. Falls during the third trimester are more common than people expect.
Your baby's brain at 30 weeks weighs only about two-thirds of what it will weigh at birth — meaning it adds roughly a third of its entire birth weight in the final 10 weeks. Brain growth in the last trimester is among the most rapid and critical in human development. Those final weeks of brain development really matter.
If you're planning to breastfeed, now is a good time to take a breastfeeding class or workshop. The mechanics of latching, positioning, and establishing supply aren't always intuitive, and understanding it before the baby arrives means you're not figuring it out while sleep-deprived and emotional.
Brain development is accelerating rapidly — keep up with DHA-rich foods (oily fish, walnuts, flaxseed) and choline (eggs, lean meat, beans) for optimal neurological development.
Take a breastfeeding class together even if you're not the one breastfeeding — understanding the process means you can provide informed support in the early days.
