Your Baby is About
honeydew melon
Your baby is about 46cm and 2.4kg — the size of a honeydew melon. Most of the lanugo is shedding now as the layer of fat provides enough insulation on its own. Your baby is gaining about 200–250 grams a week from here on. The kidneys are fully developed and the liver is processing waste. Your baby is practising the sucking and swallowing reflex constantly — they're ready to feed.
At 35 weeks, most babies are in their final position. If yours is still breech, this is the week to have a more detailed conversation with your provider about options — including ECV, positions to encourage turning, and what a breech birth or planned caesarean would look like. Your provider will also assess your cervix in coming weeks to see how it's changing in preparation for labour.
The fat your baby is building right now isn't just padding — it's metabolically active brown fat, specifically designed to generate heat. Newborns can't shiver to warm themselves, so they rely on this brown fat to produce heat chemically. Babies born before 35 weeks often struggle to regulate body temperature precisely because they haven't had time to build enough of this specialised fat.
Pelvic floor exercises — if you haven't been doing them — are genuinely worth starting now. Even just five minutes a day of Kegel exercises can make a significant difference to recovery after birth, regardless of how you deliver. Apps like Squeezy (designed specifically for pelvic floor training) make it easy to build a habit.
Small, frequent meals are essential now as your stomach has very little room. Six small meals rather than three large ones reduces heartburn and keeps energy levels steadier.
Start infant first aid training this week — knowing what to do if your baby chokes is one of the most useful things you can do before they arrive.
