Your Baby is About
lime
At about 5.4cm and weighing roughly 14 grams — the size of a lime — your baby has hit a massive milestone. Almost all major organs are now formed and starting to function. Reflexes are kicking in: if your baby's palm is touched, the fingers will close. The intestines, which had been growing in the base of the umbilical cord, have now migrated back into the abdomen as there's finally enough room. Your baby's face looks distinctly human now — a recognisable profile with a clear nose and chin.
The risk of miscarriage drops significantly after Week 12 — this is why many people choose this week to share their pregnancy news. Your first trimester screening should happen by the end of this week if it hasn't already, combining the nuchal translucency scan with bloodwork. Morning sickness typically begins to ease for most people around now, though for some it lingers into the second trimester.
Your baby's fingerprints are now fully formed and completely unique — no one in human history has ever had or will ever have the same fingerprints as your baby. And they formed before you even started showing. Your baby can also hiccup now — tiny rhythmic movements that happen when the diaphragm gets a little jump-started. You can't feel them yet, but they're happening.
If you've been keeping your pregnancy private, this is often the week people feel comfortable sharing the news. Think about who you want to tell in person before announcing publicly. The people who matter most should hear it from you directly, not from a social media post.
Magnesium helps with leg cramps, which can start as early as the first trimester. Dark chocolate, avocado, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens are all good sources.
Plan how you want to share the news together — whose parents to tell first, whether you want to do it in person or with a call, and whether you want to announce it at the same time to both families.
