Ovulation happens at the end of this week — one follicle ruptures and releases a mature egg, which travels down the fallopian tube. The egg is viable for just 12–24 hours. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days, so the window for conception spans several days around ovulation.
This is the fertile window — conception is most likely to occur in the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. LH surge (detectable with ovulation test strips) typically happens 24–36 hours before ovulation. If you're tracking cycles, this is the week that determines timing.
The egg released at ovulation is the largest human cell — just barely visible to the naked eye at about 0.1mm. Sperm are among the smallest human cells. The union of the two largest and smallest cells in the human body creates a zygote smaller than a grain of sand.
If you're trying to conceive, ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) can help you identify your LH surge and time intercourse accurately. They're widely available and easy to use. Even without tracking, having sex every 2–3 days throughout the cycle covers the fertile window without the pressure of perfect timing.
Iron-rich foods support the uterine lining building up this week. Try lean meat, spinach, lentils, and pair them with vitamin C (like a squeeze of lemon) to boost absorption.
Warm environments reduce sperm quality — hot tubs, saunas, and laptops on laps are worth avoiding in the weeks around conception.
