Your Baby is About

🌱What's Happening in There?

You've made it to the second trimester — and your baby is now about 7.4cm long, roughly the size of a peach. The head is still proportionally large but finally starting to balance out as the body grows faster. Vocal cords are forming this week, and your baby now has a unique set of fingerprints. The kidneys are fully functional and excreting urine into the amniotic fluid. Lanugo — a fine, soft layer of hair — is starting to cover the skin as insulation.

🏥Good to Know

For most people, the second trimester brings real relief: nausea starts to ease, energy begins to return, and the risk of miscarriage is now much lower. Your bump may start to become visible if it hasn't already — especially if this isn't your first pregnancy. Breast changes continue, with colostrum already beginning to form in the milk ducts.

💡Whoa, Really?

Your baby is now swallowing amniotic fluid — and actually tasting it. The flavours of what you eat pass into the amniotic fluid, and your baby's taste buds are picking them up. Research shows that babies born to mothers who ate a varied diet during pregnancy are more willing to accept a wider range of foods after birth. That garlic pasta you're craving? Your baby is getting a preview too.

🤱This Week's Tip

Second trimester energy returning is real — use it wisely. This is the sweet spot to sign up for a prenatal class, start researching prams and car seats, book a hospital tour, and if you want a maternity photoshoot, start planning it. The third trimester comes faster than you expect.

🥗 Nutrition This Week

Eat a varied diet this trimester — your baby is tasting everything you eat through the amniotic fluid. Introducing a wide range of flavours now may help with fussiness later.

👫

The second trimester is often when partners feel more connected to the pregnancy — bump is becoming visible and energy is returning. This is a great time to attend prenatal classes together.
