Overall Pregnancy
Your Baby is About
grape
Your baby is now officially a fetus — the embryo stage is over. About the size of a grape at 2.3cm, this week brings a big milestone: the tail that was present in earlier weeks has completely disappeared. Elbows are forming, toes are visible, and eyelids are developing. Fingerprints are already beginning to form — completely unique patterns that your baby will carry for the rest of their life.
Nausea is often at its peak around Week 9, which makes sense because hCG levels are at their highest right now. Your uterus is about the size of a grapefruit and starting to fill your pelvic cavity, which can cause more frequent urination and some bloating. If morning sickness has been rough, ask your provider about vitamin B6 — it's one of the most evidence-backed remedies for pregnancy nausea.
Your baby's heart has now divided into four chambers and is beating at around 170 beats per minute. At the same time, your baby is already producing their own unique fingerprints. No two people in history have ever had the same fingerprints, and your baby's are forming right now, at less than an inch long.
If you're struggling with nausea, try the BRAT approach: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. These bland, easy-to-digest foods are gentle on a queasy stomach. Cold foods tend to have less smell than hot ones too. Experiment with what works for your body — nausea management is very personal.
Staying hydrated is harder when nausea is peaking — try sipping water with ice or adding a slice of lemon, which can settle the stomach. Coconut water and diluted fruit juice also count.
Offer to handle grocery shopping this week — navigating supermarket smells when nauseous is genuinely difficult. Bring a list and check in before going.
